How Michael Jackson Blurred Shade Traces on MTV With ‘Billie Jean’

After Yetnikoff’s threats, MTV executives finally gave in, and Billie Jean premiered on March 10, 1983. The music video grew to become the primary video by a Black artist to obtain heavy rotation on the channel and proving that Black artists can command crossover fanbases on the community.

The music video for “Beat It” was launched weeks afterward March 31, together with the explosive video for “Thriller” later that yr in December.
