‘Sonnet Increase’ Winners Introduced, Spotlighting Miami’s Tales – Hy-Lo Information

Miami officers and native arts organizations have introduced the winners of “Sonnet Increase: Love Poems for Miami,” a citywide poetry contest that drew greater than 500 authentic submissions and 140,000 public votes.

The initiative, launched in January by Elevate Cities, Elevate Miami, O, Miami and SWWIM, invited residents to put in writing 14-line sonnets reflecting their connection to the town.

Organizers mentioned the competition noticed participation from first-time writers, school rooms and even a poet as younger as 7 years outdated. Submissions got here from 19 states and eight nations, with poems written in English, Spanish, French and Creole.

Second Place: Andrea (Grade 10, The Cushman Faculty), “Border to Boulevard”

Third Place: Nadine (Grade 8, Miami Arts Constitution Faculty), “Magic Metropolis”

Winners obtained money prizes starting from $500 to $2,000, together with alternatives for publication and stay performances throughout the town.

Mayor Eileen Higgins mentioned the competition helped strengthen civic satisfaction throughout the town.
